An automatic transfer switch connects the backed-up circuits to the appropriate power source: utility or generator. The generator and its controls work with the switch to respond to an outage. The engine produces electricity; the transfer equipment provides the controlled route to the home.
What happens when utility power fails?
For a compatible automatic home-standby system, the sequence generally looks like this:
- The system recognizes a utility problem. Sensing and delay settings determine when a disturbance becomes a start request.
- The generator starts and becomes ready to accept load. Starting and warmup take time.
- The switch transfers the backed-up circuits. The intended loads now receive generator power.
- Any load controls do their assigned work. Some equipment may be delayed, shed, or excluded under the design.
- The system confirms utility return and transfers back. The engine completes its cooldown and returns to standby.
Generac describes automatic operation while the owner is home or away in its home-standby FAQ. Exact sensing, start, and transfer logic belongs to the matched controller and switch; do not assume every ATS contains all those controls inside its own enclosure.
Automatic does not mean the power never drops
In an open-transition switch, one source is disconnected before the other is connected. Schneider Electric describes this as a break-before-make sequence. Its explanation of ATS transition modes distinguishes that design from other types of transfer equipment.
A computer can restart during an interruption that the furnace barely notices. If you need a router, computer, or other device to ride through the gap, specify that separately and select compatible bridging equipment for the device’s actual requirements. The word “automatic” alone does not promise uninterrupted power.
Why the air conditioner may come on later
Load management can allow lower-priority equipment to wait while the generator accepts other loads. That delay may be intentional rather than a failed transfer. Generac’s 50A Smart Management Module manual describes priority-based recovery and load shedding; the installed controls determine the behavior.
For example, a homeowner might see lights and refrigeration return before cooling resumes. At handoff, ask which loads can be delayed, approximately what normal behavior looks like, and whom to call if the expected recovery does not occur. Do not assume every unpowered appliance is supposed to be shed.
A running engine does not prove that the house transferred
Three observations describe different situations: “the engine never started,” “it started but the backed-up circuits stayed dark,” and “most circuits returned but one appliance did not.” Record which happened, any visible status message, and the time. Those details help the technician identify the part of the system that needs attention.
Do not open the switch or operate an internal manual handle to investigate. Generac’s 100–200A transfer-switch manual warns of high voltage and requires trained electrical work. Utility and generator sources both belong in the technician’s isolation procedure.
Ask for the entire sequence at commissioning
A useful demonstration shows the agreed loads on generator power, any intentional load delays, transfer back, and the ready state afterward. Ask the installer to explain that behavior while you can observe it.
