A standby generator’s propane tank needs to pass two checks: enough stored fuel for your outage plan, and enough vapor delivery for the generator at the coldest design conditions. A 500-gallon tank may fit one property and be inadequate for another. The nameplate tank size alone cannot settle it.
Start with usable gallons, not tank nameplate capacity
Residential propane tanks are generally filled to about 80% of their nominal capacity to leave expansion space. A nominal 500-gallon tank therefore holds about 400 gallons at that fill level. AmeriGas explains the 80% fill rule.
You also need a refill reserve. In the following example, 20% of nominal tank capacity is reserved. That is a calculation assumption, not a universal refill threshold or permission to run every tank down to that level. Agree on the actual minimum and delivery trigger with your supplier.

The assumed 2.5 gal/hr is an example rate, not a specification for a named model. The table excludes other propane appliances, maintenance downtime, and fuel-delivery constraints. It compares storage arithmetic; it does not approve these tanks for a particular generator.
Work backward from your outage target
For an illustrative 72-hour target at 2.5 gal/hr, the generator needs 72 × 2.5 = 180 gallons. With an 80% starting fill and a 20% reserve, only 60% of nominal capacity is allocated to use. The arithmetic minimum is therefore 180 ÷ 0.60 = 300 gallons of nominal capacity, before other appliances or delivery margin.
Repeat the calculation at a heavier-use rate. At an assumed 4 gal/hr, the same target needs 288 gallons, or 480 gallons of nominal capacity under the same assumptions. This shows why a tank selected around a light-load estimate can leave little margin when heating demand increases.
Check cold-weather vaporization separately
A tank can contain liquid propane and still fail to supply sufficient vapor. Tank geometry, liquid level, outdoor temperature, and sustained demand affect withdrawal capacity. PERC’s Technical Pocket Guide, pages 9–10 also distinguishes intermittent from continuous loading. A chart for intermittent appliance use should not be treated as blanket approval for days of generator operation.
Ask the propane professional to verify the complete fuel system against the exact generator’s full-load requirement and the other appliances that can run at the same time. Include regulators and piping in that check.
Bring these details to the tank supplier
- Generator model, fuel-demand sheet, and intended outage duration.
- Existing tank size and whether it is aboveground or underground.
- Other connected propane appliances and their input ratings.
- Space for the installation and a delivery truck’s access route.
- Your agreed refill trigger and arrangements for severe-weather delays.
