“We will try not to use it” and an installed automatic control are different promises. The proposal should say whether a load is physically outside the backup section, automatically controlled, or dependent on owner action. Which is better for a household that travels?
Compare the behavior when nobody is home. A plan relying on someone to turn off optional loads has an operating dependency that an unattended design must address. A whole-service switch paired with properly selected controls may fit that need; a well-chosen essential-load panel may also provide the required unattended coverage.
The choice is not determined by the words “essential” and “whole-house.” Identify what must keep working, then compare designs that deliver that result.
Plan expansion by naming the future load
Ask what would be involved in adding a heat pump, another well, or a workshop circuit later. Available panel space, generator reserve, switch capacity, fuel supply, and compatible controls all matter. A larger switch alone does not make the rest of the system ready.
