Standby Generator Placement and Clearance Guide

Understand the difference between wall clearance, distance from openings, overhead space, and the room technicians need to service the generator.

“It can sit 18 inches from the house” is not a complete generator-placement plan. A rear-wall clearance does not answer how far the unit must be from a window, vent, overhang, fence, or neighboring building. The correct location must satisfy the exact generator’s instructions and the locally applicable requirements together.

A real clearance example, with its limits

The table below summarizes Generac’s 60 Hz Air-Cooled Generators, 10 kW to 26 kW installation guide, A0001846478 Rev. E, May 20, 2025, pages 15–16. It is an example for equipment covered by that guide—not a universal chart for every Generac, liquid-cooled unit, or newer model.

Measure from the right place

A plan should identify the exact enclosure position and every relevant opening, rather than putting a single dimension between the pad and the wall. A slab edge is not automatically the measurement reference used by the equipment instructions.

Consider a proposed spot 18 inches from siding but close to a bedroom window. Meeting the rear clearance would not establish compliance at that window. Similarly, adequate space behind the unit would not compensate for a fence tight against its exhaust end.

Ask for a marked site sketch showing the enclosure, doors and windows, vents and intakes, nearby buildings, and the clearances being applied. Generac directs owners to the exact installation guide for dimensions and clearance requirements in its standby-generator FAQ.

Can it go under a deck or behind landscaping?

Treat a deck as a location that needs full review, not an automatic yes because one height measurement works. The installer must account for overhead structures, exhaust movement, nearby openings, combustible materials, and access. A passing dimension in one direction does not approve the overall location.

For screening, show the proposed fence or planting at its mature size. Can the enclosure panels still be removed? Can a technician reach the service points? Will branches, mulch, leaves, or stored items occupy space the original plan kept clear? A landscape drawing should preserve the operating and service space rather than fill it later.

Check water and access before choosing the shortest pipe run

Look for roof runoff, low ground, downspout discharge, and the route a technician will use. Generac’s installation overview calls for a stable, well-drained location with maintenance access. A short connection route is useful only after the location works.

Also identify lot lines, easements, underground utilities, and local site restrictions through the permit and site-readiness review. Do not assume the manufacturer’s rear clearance is also a property-line setback.
