The choice between an 18 kW and 22 kW Generac should follow a comparison of simultaneous loads and motor starts. The additional output can be valuable when it supports an appliance combination you actually need. It should not be chosen from square footage alone.

On either listed fuel, the difference in this comparison is 4 kW. What matters is whether that difference changes the home’s intended operation.

Identify the demanding combination

Ask the installer to describe the most demanding routine the system is expected to support. It might combine cooling, a well pump, refrigeration, and cooking. In an all-electric home, heating elements and water heating can be major contributors.

For illustration only, an 11 kW background load plus a 5 kW appliance produces 16 kW of running demand. That is below both listed natural-gas ratings, but it leaves different amounts of rated capacity before considering another load. Neither result proves that a compressor will start successfully.

Check HVAC starts separately

The largest running load and the hardest starting event are not necessarily the same thing. Obtain the HVAC model and electrical information instead of assuming tonnage provides the whole answer. Two compressors starting close together can create a different requirement from either one starting alone.

Compare the restrictions each proposal needs

Ask what can run on each option and what must be delayed, interrupted, or excluded. If the 18 kW proposal requires pausing an appliance that the household considers essential, that restriction deserves as much attention as the equipment price difference.

Conversely, if both options support the same agreed routine, ask what the larger unit’s reserve is intended to cover. A planned heat-pump replacement is a concrete design input. An unspecified possibility is harder to evaluate.

Review the installation and service package

Compare fuel requirements, transfer equipment, controls, commissioning, and service terms. Similar-looking enclosures do not guarantee identical installation work or maintenance tasks. Have the installer explain model-specific differences instead of carrying assumptions from one capacity group to another.
