Generator Buying, Cost & Warranty

How to Compare Generator Installation Quotes

Use a consistent checklist to compare generator proposals, expose missing scope, and understand what a lower or higher quote actually buys.

Compare generator quotes by the finished system and its responsibilities before comparing the total price. Two proposals are comparable only when they address the same household needs and make their included work, exclusions, and unresolved costs clear.

Give every bidder the same outage brief

Describe the appliances and functions you want available, the interruptions you will accept, your fuel, and known future additions. A proposal that excludes cooling is not a lower-priced version of one that includes it.

Ask each installer to identify the largest relevant start and any load-control assumptions. Use the sizing guide to prepare the equipment information once, then share the same information with each bidder.

Build a side-by-side scope table

Quote comparison fields
FieldWhat a complete answer identifies
Generator and transfer equipmentFull model numbers and the fuel rating used in the design.
Backed-up loadsIncluded circuits or appliances, exclusions, and managed loads.
Site workLocation, support, delivery, trenching, and restoration.
Connections and upgradesFuel work, electrical work, utility coordination, and allowances.
CompletionApprovals, inspection responsibility, startup, representative load test, and instruction.
After-sale supportApplicable warranties, service contact, monitoring terms, and optional maintenance.

Mark each item “included,” “excluded,” or “needs clarification.” Do not fill a blank with an assumption based on a conversation or a product photograph.

Add excluded costs before ranking prices

Consider an invented example: Quote A is $11,000 but excludes separately estimated fuel work of $1,500 and restoration of $500. Its comparable planning total is $13,000. Quote B is $12,600 and includes those same tasks. Subject to verifying equivalent scope, B is $400 lower on that basis.

These figures are arithmetic examples, not local market prices. Unresolved estimates still carry uncertainty. An included task also needs a definition; “restoration” could mean different levels of finish.

Read payment and change terms

Identify the deposit, progress payments, final payment conditions, cancellation terms, and how changes will be approved. Check the equipment delivery assumptions and what happens if a utility or inspection delays completion.

Keep financing separate long enough to compare the cash project price and the total financed obligation. A smaller monthly payment can reflect a longer term rather than a less expensive installation.

Separate warranty promises from service promises

A manufacturer’s limited warranty covers defined obligations under its terms. Installer workmanship coverage, maintenance, monitoring, and emergency response are distinct arrangements. Generac’s published air-cooled warranty document demonstrates why coverage needs more detail than a year count.

For an advertised extension, ask for eligibility and the coverage document. Use the warranty guide to compare those terms.

Resolve differences before signing

Send the short clarification list to each installer and request an updated written proposal. Select the bid whose equipment, scope, operating limits, and support you understand. A clear proposal gives both parties a practical way to determine when the installation is complete.
