24kW vs. 26kW vs. 28kW Generac Generators

Compare 24, 26, and 28 kW Generac models on your fuel, then evaluate whether extra capacity changes HVAC, heating, or managed-load operation.

For the referenced Next Generation family, the 24, 26, and 28 kW names describe propane ratings; the listed natural-gas outputs are lower. Start with the rating for your fuel, then determine whether the additional capacity supports a useful change in household operation.

These values come from Generac’s 22–28 kW specification sheet and apply to the models it lists, not every historical product bearing those sizes. Record the complete model number in each quote.

The table also shows why the difference between advertised names is not always the difference available on natural gas. Moving from the listed 26 kW option to the 28 kW option adds 1 kW of rated natural-gas output in this family.

Ask what each step actually enables

Have the installer evaluate the same appliance list for all three candidates. For each step, ask whether it enables another sustained load, improves a particular starting event, or reduces the need to interrupt a managed appliance.

If the operating restrictions remain identical, the value of moving up may be reserve capacity. That reserve should have an explained purpose. A larger badge alone does not show how the family will experience the difference.

Multiple HVAC systems need a coordinated plan

Two or more conditioning systems introduce both sustained demand and potential overlapping starts. Electric auxiliary heat can further change the requirement. Identify the zones that must remain available and any controls that sequence them.

Include fuel delivery and the complete package

The gas supply must support the chosen generator and the property’s other relevant gas loads. With propane, the tank and supply arrangement also need to support the required delivery under expected conditions. More electrical capacity cannot correct inadequate fuel delivery.

Compare a generator-only offering with other generator-only offerings, or normalize the package contents. For example, Generac’s model 7326 listing includes a particular package configuration, while model 7327 has its own listed contents. Verify the switch and accessories instead of assuming all online prices describe the same purchase.

Do not turn percentage-load figures into a fuel verdict

A brochure’s half-load fuel figure for a 28 kW generator represents a different electrical load from half load on a 24 kW unit. Compare consumption at a common household demand when suitable manufacturer data are available. Otherwise, disclose the estimation method.

Request a short written comparison: loads served, important starts, controlled appliances, future allowance, and total installation price for each model. That makes the decision concrete and gives the commissioning visit a clear set of household functions to demonstrate.
