The physical installation may take hours or a few workdays; the full project can take several weeks or longer. Those are general expectations, not a local appointment promise. Ask for the date the system is expected to be approved, tested, and ready for automatic operation—not just the day the generator will arrive.
There are three dates worth putting on the proposal
- Equipment delivery: when the specified generator and switch are available at the site or installer.
- Construction window: when site, fuel, and electrical crews perform their work.
- Ready-for-service target: when required approvals and commissioning are expected to be complete.
A generator can be delivered on time while the job is still waiting for a gas-meter change. A completed trench can still be waiting for inspection before backfill. Combining those dates into “installation next Friday” hides the dependencies you need to understand.
A sample schedule shows the difference
This is an invented four-week planning example, not Brite Generators’ availability or an average for Kentucky or Tennessee. Some stages overlap; others cannot proceed until the previous work or approval is complete.

If the utility appointment in this example moves to week six, booking a crew in week three does not preserve a week-four ready date. Ask which unfinished item currently controls completion and who is responsible for moving it forward.
Excavation notice is part of the schedule
Kentucky 811 states at least two full working days for its normal advance-notice process. Tennessee 811 states at least three working days. Do not treat those minimum notice periods as a guarantee that every utility conflict or private line will be resolved by a particular day. The contractor needs a usable, cleared work route before excavation.
What you can settle early
Finalize the intended coverage, disclose future electrical loads, and provide access for the site visit. Identify HOA restrictions if applicable and give the installer information about gates, pets, landscaping, buried private utilities, and planned travel. Late changes to location or coverage can reopen both the design and scheduling work.
Ask whether your home will lose utility power during the electrical work, for how long the installer expects that interruption, and what event could extend it. Arrange household needs around the confirmed construction plan.
Use a clear definition of complete
“Installed” should not leave you guessing whether the generator is ready. Agree on required inspection status, successful automatic transfer and return, the covered loads, and the owner demonstration. Keep those deliverables in the installation scope.
