100-Amp vs. 200-Amp Generator Transfer Switches

Separate the transfer switch’s current rating from generator output, then compare whole-service and selected-load arrangements.

A 200-amp transfer switch does not turn a generator into a 200-amp power source. The switch rating describes the current the equipment is designed to carry under its specified conditions. Generator output, utility-service capacity, and the loads receiving backup are related design decisions, but they are not interchangeable numbers.

Why a 200A switch can go with a smaller generator

Consider a deliberately simplified example: a 20,000-watt generator supplying a balanced 240-volt, unity-power-factor load. Current is 20,000 ÷ 240 = about 83.3 amps. Putting that generator through a suitable 200A switch does not increase its available power.

At the same voltage, 200 amps corresponds to 48,000 volt-amperes. That is an electrical comparison, not a requirement to buy a 48kW generator for every home with 200A service. Actual sizing must account for loads, motor starting, power factor, fuel-specific output, and the designed load controls.

When utility power is available, the transfer equipment may carry a larger service load than the generator can supply during an outage. That is why choosing switch amperage solely from generator watts can produce the wrong answer.

Compare the arrangement before the price

Real model names show another distinction

Generac’s 100–200A ATS manual lists RXSC100A3 and RXSC200A3 as non-service-entrance models, and RXSW100A3 and RXSW200A3 as service-entrance-rated models with a disconnect. See the model list in manual 10000009569 Rev. E, March 20, 2024. The shared amp number does not make those models interchangeable.

A quote should identify the complete model, voltage and phase, enclosure suitability, and intended location in the electrical system. Read the service-entrance comparison before accepting “200-amp automatic switch” as the entire specification.

More amperage does not settle future expansion

A larger switch may avoid one future constraint, but it cannot add generator capacity, panel spaces, fuel delivery, or a compatible control system. If you expect to add a heat pump or EV charger, tell the installer what you intend to add and ask how that changes the actual design.

Similarly, a fault-current rating is not the same thing as the 100A or 200A carrying rating. The installer must verify the equipment’s suitability for the available fault current and required protective devices. That is another reason to compare exact equipment rather than the largest number printed in a listing.

Ask for a one-sentence explanation of the selection

A useful answer sounds like: “This switch transfers this part of your electrical system, and these controls keep these loads within the generator’s capacity.” If the proposal cannot identify those three things, the amp comparison is unfinished.

Use the coverage comparison to decide what you expect to work during an outage, then have the electrician select and document the suitable switch.
