What Size Generator Do I Need for a Well Pump?

Identify the well motor, voltage, controls, and starting requirements before choosing backup power. Horsepower alone cannot establish the right generator.

The generator needed for a well pump depends on the motor and control system, its starting requirements, and the other loads operating when it starts. A horsepower label is useful identification, but it does not supply all of that information. There is no reliable single generator size for every pump with the same horsepower.

Identify the equipment before looking up a size

Gather the well installation record, pump invoice, or service report. Look for the motor manufacturer, model, horsepower, voltage, phase, and control-box or drive model. The motor may be down the well, so paperwork and controller labels can be more useful than a photograph of the well cap.

Record whether the system has a conventional pressure switch, a separate motor control box, or an electronic variable-speed drive. Do not infer the motor arrangement from a cable you can see above ground. If the records are missing, ask the well contractor to identify the installed combination.

Keep horsepower, electrical input, and startup separate

Horsepower describes mechanical output. The electrical input also reflects motor losses, and the start can demand substantially more current than normal pumping. Multiplying horsepower by a conversion factor does not produce a complete generator recommendation.

Generac’s motor-sizing white paper explains why motor type and starting method affect generator selection. Its general examples are useful for understanding the problem; they do not establish the requirement of an unidentified residential well.

If the pump manufacturer specifies a minimum generator rating, ask what conditions that guidance assumes and whether it covers the motor alone. A generator supplying the house must also support the other active loads.

Match the electrical supply, not just total watts

A pump requiring 240 V needs an appropriate 240 V supply. A 120 V-only generator does not become suitable simply because its wattage number appears large enough. Frequency, phase, output-current limits, and the connection equipment also need to match.

Well pumps are usually part of the building’s fixed electrical system. Have a qualified electrician provide the approved transfer arrangement and verify the circuit. Do not improvise a connection to a household receptacle or modify the pump controls to bypass protection.

Plan for the pump to start when you are not watching

The pressure system can call for water while the refrigerator, HVAC, or water heater is operating. A pressure tank can reduce how often the pump cycles, but it does not remove the motor-starting requirement.

Describe an actual outage routine: showers, toilet use, drinking water, and any essential livestock or other water needs. If HVAC is already running when the pump calls, the design must accommodate that combination or use suitable controls to avoid it. See how background load and startup demand combine.

A variable-speed drive changes the starting behavior, but it has its own input-power and power-quality requirements. Use its generator guidance rather than applying a generic multiplier intended for a conventional motor.

Verify water delivery during commissioning

  • Confirm that the pump starts and reaches its normal operating pressure on generator power.
  • Check it with representative household loads active.
  • Verify normal controller operation without recurring faults or failed starts.
  • Confirm that any load-management arrangement preserves the household’s required water availability.
