Undersized vs. Oversized Generators

Compare generator sizes by the loads they can support, the interruptions they require, and their installed operating costs—not by the largest number alone.

A generator is undersized when it cannot support the agreed loads and starting events under the installation’s design conditions. Excess capacity is a different issue: it may add cost without providing a household benefit. The right fit supports the intended outage routine with clear operating limits and justified reserve.

What insufficient capacity can look like

A generator may handle lights and refrigeration but struggle when a compressor starts or electric heat turns on. Possible symptoms include overload indications, protective trips, failed motor starts, or more load shedding than the household expected.

Those symptoms do not prove the generator needs replacement. Fuel-delivery problems, wiring issues, equipment faults, or incorrect control settings can produce similar behavior. Record what was running, what tried to start, and any alarm message so the installer can diagnose the cause.

Do not repeatedly reset protection or increase breaker size to push more power through the system. If normal planned use causes problems, the load assumptions and equipment condition need review.

Do not assume every larger model requires every listed upgrade. Equally, do not assume a higher kW rating has no effect on the supporting installation. Ask for the differences in the actual proposals.

Fuel-use comparisons need care. Fifty percent load on a 20 kW generator means 10 kW; fifty percent on a 30 kW generator means 15 kW. Those two brochure figures do not compare the same household demand. Use manufacturer data at a common load where available, and identify any estimate.

A fuel label can change the comparison

Use the output rating for your fuel and exact model. Generac’s published 22–28 kW specification sheet separates propane and natural-gas ratings and lists rated load current. Compare those fields rather than relying only on the large number in a product name.

The installer should also apply the manufacturer’s relevant site-condition adjustments. A generator chosen around its headline rating may have less usable capacity than the initial comparison assumed.

Reserve capacity should have a reason

Useful reasons include a documented future appliance, a known motor-starting requirement, or uncertainty that the installer has explicitly allowed for. “Buy 25% more” is not a universal substitute for those checks.

Describe the future addition: a second heat pump, a workshop motor, or a particular EV charging rate. The installer can compare the present plan with that future condition. An unspecified possibility should not be treated as an already measured load.

A larger unit can also be reasonable if it avoids restrictions the household finds unacceptable. That is an operating preference worth pricing, even if a smaller managed system is technically feasible.

Compare two designs using the same outage scenario

  1. Give both proposals the same backed-up appliance list and fuel choice.
  2. Identify the sustained load and the important motor-starting event.
  3. List each appliance that will be delayed, interrupted, or excluded.
  4. Price the generator, controls, and supporting installation together.
  5. Document how commissioning will demonstrate the promised operation.
