Generac Water Pumps: Clean Water, Semi-Trash, Trash, and Chemical

Match the liquid, debris, lift, and hose route to the pump, using documented Generac examples across four pump categories.

Choose a water pump by what must pass through it and the route the liquid must travel. The highest gallons-per-minute number is not enough. Debris, liquid compatibility, vertical lift, and hose losses can decide whether a pump is suitable before engine size becomes relevant.

Why maximum flow and maximum head are different numbers

Head describes the hydraulic demand the pump must overcome. Flow changes as that demand changes. Maximum flow and maximum head are endpoints, not a promise that both occur together.

The ST20K sheet lists 158GPM flow, 108 feet maximum total head, and 26 feet maximum suction lift. Do not read that as “158 gallons every minute while lifting water 108 feet.” Request the performance curve or manufacturer-confirmed duty point for the required flow, elevation difference, hose length, diameter, and fittings.

As a simple volume calculation, moving 1,000 gallons at an actual sustained 100GPM would take 10 minutes. At 50GPM it would take 20 minutes. Those are arithmetic examples; neither predicts a particular pump’s performance, priming time, or time lost to changing water conditions.

Measure the suction side as carefully as the discharge

Record the vertical distance from the water surface to the pump, including the lowest expected water level. Identify the hose route and how the suction strainer will remain submerged and clear of unsuitable material. Ask for the correct suction hose and connections rather than assuming any hose of the same diameter will work.

Generac’s C20 owner’s manual explains priming and installation considerations and warns against dry running. Follow the exact model’s instructions; a pump that is advertised as easy to prime still needs the required liquid and setup.

“Chemical pump” does not mean “any chemical”

The C20 manual directs users to chemical compatibility information and prohibits pumping flammable liquids. Supply the chemical name, concentration, temperature, and safety data to the manufacturer or qualified supplier. Include hose, seal, and fitting compatibility in the review.

Likewise, “trash” is a pump category, not approval for sewage, stringy waste, or hazardous floodwater. Identify the actual material and a suitable discharge destination before selecting equipment.

Bring a complete pumping brief

Provide the liquid, expected debris, volume, required transfer time, elevation change, and proposed hose route. Include access and an outdoor engine location consistent with the manual’s carbon-monoxide precautions. Gasoline-powered equipment must not be operated inside a basement or other enclosed space to remove water.
