Generac Pressure Washer Buying Guide

Buy a pressure washer for the surfaces, soil, and workload you actually have. The largest PSI number is not automatically the best choice for painted siding, a wooden deck, vehicles, or daily equipment cleaning. Pressure, water flow, nozzle selection, and the permitted cleaning method work together.

Read PSI and GPM together

PSI describes pressure; GPM describes water flow. A product with more flow can move more water, but a higher rating alone does not tell you how quickly or safely it will clean a particular surface. Read the manufacturer’s rating conditions and the surface manufacturer’s cleaning instructions.

What about “cleaning units”?

Multiplying the listed pressure and flow gives 3,100 × 2.5 = 7,750 and 3,800 × 3.2 = 12,160. This is a shorthand comparison of two advertised numbers. It is not a standardized prediction of cleaning speed, proof that both maxima occur simultaneously, or a reason to use maximum pressure on a delicate surface.

For broad concrete areas, ask about a compatible surface-cleaner attachment and its pressure, flow, and connection requirements. For vehicles or painted surfaces, begin with the approved cleaning method and detergent. An attachment that physically connects can still be the wrong match for the machine or surface.

Match the pump and hose to the workload

For occasional property maintenance, compare storage, starting effort, hose reach, and routine upkeep. For frequent work, ask how the pump is serviced, which parts can be replaced, and what the warranty says about your intended use.

The cited belt-drive model uses a triplex pump; the smaller example uses an axial-cam pump. That distinction is more useful than treating both as identical machines with different PSI labels. Request the maintenance schedule and service options rather than assuming a pump type guarantees a particular lifespan.

Check the water supply before buying

Confirm the required inlet flow, pressure, temperature, hose size, and supply arrangement from the exact manual. Do not assume the washer can draw from a tank or pond unless that setup is approved. A long supply hose or a marginal source belongs in the discussion before purchase.

Likewise, confirm approved detergents, application equipment, and runoff handling for the job. Pressure washing is not automatically appropriate for every stain or material.

Electric start does not mean an electric motor

The 3,100PSI example has a gasoline engine with battery-assisted starting. It still produces engine exhaust. CDC advises keeping gasoline-powered washers outdoors and at least 20 feet from windows, doors, and vents. Never point the spray at a person.
