Generator Buying, Cost & Warranty

Buying a Generator Online vs. Buying From a Local Installer

Compare buying the equipment yourself with purchasing an installed package, including compatibility, delivery, installation acceptance, and support responsibilities.

Buying a generator online can separate equipment purchasing from installation, while an installer package can place more of the project under one agreement. Compare the complete installed cost and responsibility for each step. The equipment checkout price alone cannot settle the decision.

Get the installation plan before ordering equipment

Have the intended installer confirm the generator model, fuel rating, transfer equipment, and accessories against your property and load plan. Also confirm that the company accepts customer-supplied equipment and identify any conditions or additional charges.

A generator that is attractive online can still be a poor fit for the service arrangement, available fuel supply, or desired backup coverage. Returning bulky equipment after discovering a mismatch can add cost and delay.

Assign the responsibilities explicitly

Who owns each part of the purchase?
TaskWhat to settle before purchase
Equipment selectionWho verifies the exact model and package compatibility?
Freight and deliveryWho unloads, inspects, reports damage, and moves the unit to its final location?
Missing or incorrect partsWho arranges replacements and pays for resulting return visits?
Installation and startupWhich company completes connections, commissioning, and homeowner instruction?
Warranty and serviceWho handles diagnosis, claims, and installation-related problems?

A combined package does not automatically answer every question; its contract should still describe these responsibilities. Separate purchases simply make coordination especially important.

Compare totals using the same included equipment

Check whether the advertised price includes a transfer switch, required battery, load controls, mounting materials, and delivery services. Add the accepted installation quote, approvals, fuel work, and other known expenses.

Then compare that total with an installer-supplied package serving the same loads. Keep unresolved allowances separate. The quote comparison guide provides a way to avoid mistaking an excluded task for a saving.

Read freight and return terms before checkout

Confirm delivery access, unloading arrangements, inspection procedures, return authorization, restocking terms, and responsibility for freight. Determine whether the seller will accept a return after delivery, installation, or activation, rather than assuming ordinary small-item return practices apply.

Keep product listings, order confirmations, serial information, and damage reports with the project records. Agree where the unit will be stored securely and how it will reach the installation location.

Separate manufacturer warranty from installer support

Buying online does not by itself establish that manufacturer coverage is absent or that a local installer must handle every issue. The applicable warranty, installation requirements, purchase documentation, and service arrangements need to be checked.

Generac’s published air-cooled limited warranty describes conditions and a claim framework; obtain the version applicable to your model. An installer may separately warrant workmanship, while retailer promotions or extensions may have their own eligibility rules.

Choose the arrangement you can manage

If buying equipment yourself, obtain written installation acceptance and a complete scope before ordering. If buying a package, ask what coordination and support the package includes. Review the installer questions so the finished project has an accountable path from equipment selection through service.
