Generator Buying, Cost & Warranty

Questions to Ask a Generac Generator Installer

Ask an installer about sizing, site design, responsibilities, testing, warranty, and service so the finished system matches your expectations.

A useful installer conversation should produce a clear backup plan, a defined installation scope, and an explanation of who supports the system afterward. Ask questions that lead to written details, not just reassurance that the proposed generator is popular or powerful enough.

How did you choose this generator?

Ask which appliances and starting events were included. Request the exact model, the output on your fuel, and the assumptions about equipment operating together. If square footage was the only input, ask what additional information is needed to finalize sizing.

Follow with: “Which loads will be excluded or interrupted?” The answer should identify appliances and explain any automatic controls. Use the load-planning guide to prepare a consistent list.

Why is this the proposed location?

Ask how the location satisfies manufacturer instructions and applicable requirements, and how it affects service access, drainage, piping, electrical routes, and restoration. Request a site sketch if the routes or boundaries are not obvious.

Also ask what remains unverified. A clear answer identifies the next step, such as a fuel-supply assessment or an approval, and explains whether the price depends on its outcome.

Who performs and coordinates each part?

  • Who handles the electrical and fuel work?
  • Who obtains required permits and schedules inspections?
  • Who coordinates utility-side changes if needed?
  • Who is responsible for trenching and restoring affected areas?
  • Who can approve and price a change to the agreed scope?

Confirm the credentials and insurance appropriate to the work and location. Dealer affiliation and permission to perform a particular trade’s work answer different questions. Where subcontractors are involved, identify the contact responsible for the completed project.

How will you demonstrate that it works?

Ask what commissioning includes: startup, transfer and retransfer, operation of the agreed loads, load-control behavior, and owner instruction. A successful engine exercise alone does not demonstrate the full backup arrangement.

Request a handover containing model and serial details, manuals, circuit or load information, warranty documents, normal operating indicators, and the service contact. Have the installer show the expected ready state before leaving.

Who handles service and warranty claims?

Ask whether the company performs maintenance and warranty work itself, and how to request help. Generac’s service-dealer guidance explains how to locate authorized service support. Verify the actual service offered locally rather than assuming every sales contact provides the same support.

Clarify routine scheduling, after-hours contact, travel charges, and any stated response commitment. During a widespread outage, a phone number alone is not a guaranteed arrival time.

What is included in the final price?

Request the equipment list, site scope, allowances, exclusions, payment milestones, and proposed schedule. Ask for the applicable warranty and any promotional extension in writing. Separate optional maintenance or monitoring from the installation contract so you understand what each buys.

Use the quote comparison checklist to record the answers. A strong installer should be able to connect the proposed equipment to your household needs and explain the steps required to deliver that result.
