An inverter generator is often worth considering for a modest, variable load and equipment with specific power-quality requirements. A conventional portable may suit a larger home-backup load. The decision still depends on the exact models. “Inverter” does not tell you whether a unit supplies 240 volts, starts your pump, or is manageable to move.
What the inverter changes
An inverter system electronically produces the output AC waveform, allowing a suitable engine-control system to vary engine speed while maintaining output frequency. That is a reason to compare light-load operation, not a promise that every inverter is quieter or more economical than every conventional model at every load. Ask for measured specifications under comparable conditions.

Check voltage before adding watts
The iQ3500 example is rated for 120-volt output. A household load calculation totaling less than 3,000 watts would still be incomplete if it included a pump requiring 240 volts. An adapter does not create the missing output voltage.

Be precise about sensitive electronics
Total harmonic distortion, or THD, describes waveform distortion. The published iQ3500 specification gives a concrete figure to discuss with an equipment manufacturer. It is more useful than assuming every generator advertised as “clean power” meets every device’s requirements.
For a furnace control, UPS, charger, or other important load, identify the exact equipment and ask about its generator requirements. A low THD number alone does not establish compatibility with all protective devices or all operating conditions. Do not assume a conventional model will damage electronics simply because it lacks an inverter.
Compare the outage you actually expect
If your plan centers on lights, communications, and a few compatible appliances, compare suitable inverter models at that load. If the plan includes larger motors or 240-volt circuits, first find models that meet those requirements, then compare noise, weight, fuel, and runtime.
Both types contain combustion engines and need a safe outdoor location. CDC prohibits indoor or garage operation even with doors open. CDC’s generator precautions apply regardless of sound level. Finally, compare fuel-specific output if propane or natural gas will be your normal supply.
