For the tri-fuel example, a hypothetical 8,000-watt continuous load is below the published propane running rating but above the natural-gas rating. A buyer planning to use natural gas must size around 7,000 running watts, then separately check starting loads, outlets, and installation conditions.
Gasoline: plan how you will keep usable fuel available
Gasoline operation makes the generator independent of a gas connection, but your plan needs safe storage, refueling stops, and a way to replenish supplies. Honda explains that deterioration varies with storage conditions and that stabilizer does not restore stale fuel. A cylinder connection can provide an alternative when gasoline is unavailable. Confirm the supported cylinder arrangement, regulator, hose, and operating conditions in the exact generator manual. For a larger stationary tank or an existing household system, have the propane supplier design the connection and verify delivery capacity. A matching fitting alone does not establish compatibility.
Ask what runtime is documented for the proposed supply and load. A runtime stated for one cylinder and one percentage load is not a promise for another cylinder or a house with continuously changing demand.
Natural gas: arrange the connection before the outage
A tri-fuel model does not turn an arbitrary outdoor gas outlet into an approved generator supply. The gas professional needs the model’s pressure and flow requirements, the hose and pipe route, and the demand from other appliances. Generac’s GP multi-fuel manual, natural-gas requirements section, calls for an appropriately sized supply.
Include the safe outdoor generator location when planning that route. “No gasoline refills” does not mean unlimited guaranteed operation; utility availability and generator service still matter.
Choose a main fuel and a fallback plan
Size the required electrical output for the normal fuel first. Then ask which loads you would drop if the fallback fuel has a lower rating. Follow the exact manual for changing fuels; do not assume every model permits the same switching procedure.
