Place a portable generator outdoors at least 20 feet from the house, with exhaust pointing away from the home and other buildings. CPSC gives that placement guidance. CDC additionally says to keep it more than 20 feet from any windows, doors, and vents. Read CDC’s portable-generator precautions.
Choose a location that satisfies both instructions and the equipment manual. The distance is a starting requirement, not proof that every spot beyond a tape-measure mark is suitable. You still need to examine where exhaust could travel and how electricity will reach the loads.
Check the whole area around the proposed spot
Start with a sketch showing the house, nearby buildings, doors, windows, and vents. Mark a candidate location, the exhaust direction, and the cord route. Include the neighbor’s side of the property; measuring only to your own front door leaves an obvious gap in the plan.
For example, a generator 25 feet from your kitchen wall but 12 feet from a neighboring bedroom window does not meet CDC’s opening-distance guidance. A long driveway is not automatically a suitable location if its useful section is beside occupied buildings.
Look at the location as it will be used during an outage. Which windows might someone open? Does the route cross a gate, steps, or vehicle path? Will moving a car force the generator closer to the house? Resolve those questions before recording the approved household setup.
A cooling clearance is not a CO separation distance
Equipment instructions can contain shorter clearances for cooling or fire protection. For example, Honda’s general safety page describes a three-foot clearance for cooling. This article concerns engine-driven portable generators. A permanently installed standby unit has a separate installation design and applicable instructions. Do not borrow a standby installation dimension to justify putting a portable unit beside the wall.
Do not solve rain or cord problems by moving indoors
A garage, shed, or porch is not the answer when rain arrives or a cord falls short. CPSC excludes those locations from portable-generator operation. Follow the generator manufacturer’s weather-protection requirements while preserving outdoor ventilation, cooling clearances, and building separation. CPSC’s prohibited-location list is explicit.
Measure the entire route before buying a cord: from the safe generator location to the actual appliance or installed inlet, including bends and safe routing. Use the cord-selection guide to check the electrical rating. A cord’s length alone cannot establish whether it is suitable.
What if the property has no suitable location?
Do not run the generator while you search for a workaround. Bring the site sketch, proposed loads, and cord route to an electrician or generator professional. Depending on the property and loads, the answer may be a different inlet location, a different backup-power system, or going somewhere with power during an outage.
