The Next Generation Platform:
What Changed & Why It Matters
10 kW through 28 kW — Air-Cooled Standby
Generac rebuilt their air-cooled home standby lineup from the ground up. More power, smarter controls, and built-in connectivity. Here is what that means for homeowners in Kentucky and Tennessee.
What the Next Generation Platform Actually Is
Generac's Next Generation lineup is the newest version of their air-cooled home standby generators. It takes the familiar Guardian concept and pushes it harder, with more power at the top end, cleaner electrical output, and smarter controls built into every size.
Instead of just refreshing the covers, Generac rebuilt the air-cooled platform from 10 kW up through 28 kW, added a new controller, redesigned the airflow, and baked cellular connectivity into the system from the factory. For homeowners, that boils down to three big wins: more capacity, stronger motor starting, and better monitoring.
"For many of the homes Brite Generators serves in Kentucky and Tennessee, that 22 to 28 kW range is now the 'do it right once' zone."
Next Generation Sizes — The Full Lineup
The current Next Generation air-cooled lineup runs from 10 to 28 kW. That gives you a much smoother ladder of options than the older Guardian line, especially in the larger sizes. Click any model below to see full specs and pricing.
Entry point for homes with modest loads, gas heat, and one smaller HVAC unit.

Solid fit for gas-heat homes that need lights, fridge, and one HVAC system covered.
View Model →
Capable of backing up a typical mid-size home including a good-sized AC and most core circuits.
View Model →
Steps you closer to true whole-home coverage in gas-heat homes with one main HVAC unit.
View Model →
Strong mid-range option for larger homes, heat pumps, and heavier all-electric loads.

On the older Guardian platform, the ceiling was 26 kW with a natural gas rating around 22.5 kW. The Next Generation platform lifts that ceiling, and those extra kilowatts are not just numbers on paper.

In real life, that extra margin at the top is what lets you run two HVAC units comfortably instead of sweating every time both try to start. It means keeping a well pump, range, and refrigerator online without aggressive load-shedding. It means supporting high-efficiency heat pumps, which have different inrush demands than old-school AC equipment. In a lot of KY and TN homes, 28 kW becomes the new sweet spot for true whole-home coverage.
What 28 kW Covers in a Real KY or TN Home
If sized and wired correctly, the 28 kW LP / 25 kW NG Next Generation unit can realistically cover a full household load. The key is not just the total kW. It is how the generator handles motor starting and load acceptance.
⚡ 28 kW Real-World Coverage
What Stays On During an Outage
- 2 central HVAC systems or AC and heat pump combo
- Well pump or booster pump
- Electric or gas range with electric oven
- Refrigerators and freezers
- Lights and outlets throughout the home
- Garage door openers and sump pump
- Home office gear and sensitive electronics
- Smart thermostats and inverter appliances
New Technology Built Into Every Unit
The Next Generation line is not just a bigger alternator in the same box. There are real control and connectivity upgrades baked in across the full 10 to 28 kW lineup.
Power Zone Controller (PZ200)
Replaces the old Evolution LCD display. Built for tighter load control and better system integration across the full lineup. Configuration and monitoring happen through the app, not the unit itself.
Built-In Cellular Mobile Link
Cellular connectivity is integrated from the factory alongside Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. No separate add-on module. Remote monitoring for status, faults, and exercise cycles is part of the platform out of the box.
True Power Technology
Total harmonic distortion stays under 5%. That is what lets you confidently run sensitive electronics, smart thermostats, and inverter-driven appliances without worrying about dirty power.
App-Based Control
Generac eliminated the on-unit LCD and leans on the Field Pro app for installers and Mobile Link for homeowners. Fewer vulnerable electronics outside, and more control from the phone in your hand.
Airflow, Enclosure, and Cold-Weather Performance
Generac reworked the entire cabinet, roof, and air intake design on the Next Generation platform. Air pulls from the rear and exhausts more efficiently. Cold-start performance is improved in low temperatures. The risk of snow and ice intrusion through the top and sides is reduced. Internal temperatures stay under better control under heavy load.
All Next Generation models share the same enclosure footprint at roughly 46.4 x 26.3 x 30.7 inches (L x W x H). That means once you plan the pad and clearances, you can upgrade within the series without reworking the entire site. Cleaner installs, easier future upgrades, and better long-term durability in harsh weather.
Engine and Noise Improvements
The Next Generation line continues using G-Force engines with tighter breathing, cooling, and electronic fuel and ignition control (EFIC). In real-world terms, enhanced airflow keeps oil and head temperatures more stable. Improved motor-starting capability means big loads do not drag voltage down as hard. A strengthened base frame and cabinet reduce vibration.
Quieter weekly exercise might sound like a small thing until a unit is parked outside a bedroom window or a tight property line. For many neighborhoods across Kentucky and Tennessee, less noise on test day is a genuine quality-of-life upgrade.
The Bottom Line for KY and TN Homes
Tie it all together and the Next Generation platform is really about stretching what an air-cooled generator can do. More usable power. Smoother sizing options from 10 through 28 kW. Better starting performance for multiple HVAC units and pumps. Cleaner electrical output for all the smart gear in a modern home. Integrated connectivity so Brite Generators can monitor, service, and support systems more proactively.
For homes with multiple HVAC systems, well pumps, and electric ranges, the extra headroom at 28 kW makes it much easier to size for whole-home coverage without jumping into a liquid-cooled commercial unit. You get near-liquid-cooled performance while staying in a more compact, simpler air-cooled package. Use our Generator Sizing Calculator to find the right fit for your home.
