A standby generator should exercise on the schedule programmed for its controller and documented for that model. Do not assume every Generac must run weekly for the same number of minutes. Supported frequency, duration, speed, and load-transfer options differ by controller and product generation.
What the ordinary exercise proves—and what it does not
A successful no-load exercise shows that the controller could command an engine start and that the engine ran for the programmed period. It can expose a weak starting system, a fuel problem, or an active shutdown alarm.
It does not necessarily prove that the automatic transfer switch will move the house to generator power, that every backed-up circuit works, or that the generator can carry the planned load. Those conclusions require the appropriate transfer or load test.
Frequency and duration are controller-specific
For one example, Generac’s setup instructions for residential liquid-cooled units with a Power Zone 410 controller allow monthly, biweekly, or weekly exercise, a selected duration, Quiet Test operation, and an optional load transfer at a separate interval. That flexibility should not be applied to every controller. Generac’s Mobile Link exercise-schedule guidance says most controllers do not support changing exercise duration remotely; Power Zone 200 support and the required subscription are exceptions. Use the choices shown by the exact controller and manual.
Pick a useful time, then observe a normal cycle
- Choose a time when sound will be noticed but will not create an avoidable disturbance.
- Keep the area around the unit clear so airflow and exhaust are not obstructed.
- During an observed cycle, note whether starting is prompt, operation is steady, and the controller returns to ready/AUTO afterward.
- Record the scheduled day and time with the service information so a missed cycle is recognizable.
If a supported system is configured to transfer power during exercise, expect a brief interruption when the automatic transfer switch changes sources. Generac’s Exercise Now with power-transfer instructions limit that feature to compatible equipment and account settings.
If an exercise appears to be missed
- Check the controller itself. The local display is more authoritative than a stale app timestamp.
- Confirm ready/AUTO status. A unit left OFF after service will not provide automatic backup.
- Read the complete alert. Save the code or message before clearing anything.
- Check the programmed schedule. A clock change, setup change, or different frequency may explain the observation.
- Review status history cautiously. Mobile Link only shows information successfully communicated through its connection.
Generac explains that status history depends on controller support and a reliable connection. A missing app event is not by itself proof that the engine failed to run.
When an exercise problem needs service
Arrange service if the engine cranks but will not start, stops with an alarm, repeatedly misses the programmed cycle, or cannot return to ready/AUTO. Do not keep resetting a recurring shutdown. Use the no-start decision guide to describe what happened.
