Power suitable plug-in appliances through correctly rated cords, or have an electrician install a generator inlet and transfer equipment for selected home circuits. Which connection fits the loads?

The inlet is only one part of the installation
An inlet gives the generator cord a place to connect. It does not, by itself, establish that the home is safely isolated from utility power. Ask the electrician to identify the transfer equipment that performs that job and demonstrate the intended operating sequence.
A promise to remember which breaker to turn off is not a substitute for the designed transfer arrangement. If someone proposes a panel interlock, have the electrician verify the exact listed equipment, panel compatibility, and local acceptance. Eaton’s interlock guide lists specific compatible loadcenters; a generic part is not an answer for every panel.
Match the generator to the complete connection
Bring photographs of the generator nameplate and receptacles, plus the exact model number. Identify which loads require 120 volts and which require 240 volts. Confirm the output available on the fuel you intend to use, rather than using the largest advertised starting-watt number.
Grounding and neutral arrangements also depend on how the generator connects. The GP multi-fuel manual, page 16, distinguishes cord-connected use from its specified transfer-switch arrangement. Have the installer resolve grounding and neutral compatibility for the complete system. Leave bonding changes and building connections to that qualified installer.
Ask for a handover you can follow during an outage
- A labeled list of backed-up circuits and any loads that must stay off.
- The exact generator outlet, cord, inlet, and transfer equipment used together.
- A demonstration of starting, transferring, managing loads, and returning to utility.
- Written instructions for shutdown, refueling interruptions, and abnormal operation.
- The safe outdoor generator position and a cord route measured from it.
Do not assume a manual portable setup will start or transfer itself while you are away. Decide who will operate it and what happens if that person is unavailable.
