How accurate is the generator size calculator?

The calculator provides estimates within 90-95% accuracy based on standard appliance wattages and typical home configurations. For exact sizing, a licensed electrician should perform a load calculation at your specific property. The tool is designed to give you a reliable starting point before scheduling a professional assessment.

What information do I need to use the calculator?

You'll need to know your home's approximate square footage, your heating system type (gas, oil, heat pump, or electric), and which appliances you consider essential during a power outage. The calculator provides easy-to-understand icons and descriptions so no technical electrical knowledge is required.

Does the calculator include generator installation costs?

No, the calculator focuses solely on generator sizing and model recommendations. Installation costs vary significantly based on your home's electrical configuration, local codes, and site conditions. After using the calculator, Brite Generators provides free installation quotes from certified Generac dealers in your area.

Can I use this calculator for portable generators?

No, this calculator is specifically designed for Generac standby generators that automatically power your entire home during outages. Portable generators have different power characteristics and connection requirements. Brite Generators offers a separate selection tool for portable generators on our website.

What Generac generator models does the calculator recommend?

The calculator recommends models from the Generac Guardian Series, ranging from 10kW to 26kW. These air-cooled standby generators are the most popular for residential use. The specific model suggested depends on your calculated peak power needs, typically with a 20% safety margin built in.

Is my personal data saved when I use the calculator?

Absolutely not. All calculations are performed locally in your web browser. No information about your home size, appliance selections, or calculated results is transmitted to our servers or stored. The tool is completely private and requires no registration or email address to use.

How do I get a formal quote after using the calculator?

Once you receive your generator recommendation, click the 'Get Free Quote' button on the results page. You'll be connected with a certified Generac installer who will schedule an on-site evaluation and provide a detailed written quote including the generator, automatic transfer switch, installation, and permits.

What if I plan to add appliances or expand my home later?

Select the 'Future Expansion' option in the calculator, which automatically sizes your generator one model larger. This provides capacity for additional circuits, a home addition, or new appliances like an electric vehicle charger, hot tub, or pool equipment that you might install later.

What size generator do I need for my home?

The size generator you need depends on your home's square footage, essential appliances, and heating/cooling systems. Most homes require between 14kW and 28kW. Our free calculator estimates your needs in about 2 minutes. Final sizing depends on fuel, actual equipment and installation requirements.

How does a generator sizing calculator work?

Our calculator adds up the running wattage of your essential appliances and systems, then factors in starting surge requirements. We apply a 20% safety margin and recommend the appropriate Generac generator for your needs.

Do I need to know technical specifications to use this calculator?

No technical knowledge is required. We use simple questions about your home size and which appliances you want to keep running. If you're unsure about something, select 'I'm not sure' and we'll estimate based on typical homes.
